Amy (Ji Yon) Choi

“I Belong Here” is inspired by my multiple identities in Canadian society – a Canadian, Korean, woman and an academic. These identities intersect with one another making me sometimes question my ‘belonging’ in Canada. The painting includes important elements of my identity and functions as a reminder that I do‘belong’ in Canada. The piece is intended to remind other East Asian minorities who often feel invisible in the Canadian anti racism discourse that they too can work toward unlearning internalized Asian racism.
